Bringing Music Therapy to Young Adults with Complex Disabilities at Nest Academy RVA

At the Center for Creative Healing, we believe in the power of creative therapies to foster connection, expression, and joy, especially for individuals who are often underserved. This fall, we are honored to partner with Nest Academy RVA to bring music therapy to young adults with complex medical, physical, and intellectual disabilities in the Richmond region.

Through this partnership, we are offering twice-monthly music therapy sessions led by board-certified music therapist Raven Bransom, MT-BC. These sessions are designed to create meaningful opportunities for engagement, confidence building, and social connection through the universal language of music.

Since the program began, participation has grown from just four members to more than 25. This growth highlights the ongoing need for adaptive, accessible programming for adults with significant disabilities and the impact that creative therapy can have when barriers are removed.

“Music therapy is powerful because it is accessible to everyone, regardless of ability,” says Bransom. “At Nest Academy, participants are encouraged to show up exactly as they are. Whether that looks like clapping along, choosing a favorite song as DJ of the day, or singing karaoke, each person finds their own way to connect and shine.”

A Safe and Supportive Space for Young Adults and Caregivers

Nest Academy RVA was founded in 2020 by four Richmond-area families seeking meaningful post-high school opportunities for their children with complex disabilities. Today, Nest provides daily enrichment, adaptive recreation, and social connection through activities such as fishing, rock climbing, boating, and now, music therapy.

Each participant attends with a caregiver, making Nest Academy a vital source of support not only for young adults but also for the families who care for them. The program offers a space where individuals feel understood, supported, and celebrated for who they are.

“As the only program of its kind in the area, Nest Academy is proud to offer our members opportunities to thrive and connect,” says Suzanne Bowers, Executive Director of Nest Academy RVA. “Partnering with the Center for Creative Healing and Raven’s music therapy program is one more way we ensure our community feels valued, included, and celebrated.”

The Impact on Families

For caregivers, the music therapy sessions offer more than enjoyment. They provide moments of relief, connection, and belonging.

One caregiver shared that music therapy has become something their loved one looks forward to every month, bringing joy through singing, clapping, and playing instruments alongside friends. Another parent described Nest Academy as filling an unmet need after high school, offering both structure and meaningful social engagement. Several families shared that music therapy helps regulate emotions, ease anxiety, and create a sense of comfort within a safe and familiar community.
