Try it at home

Here is one way to use music at home to practice mindfulness.

  1. Select a song, it can be any type of music
  2. Find a quieter place to listen to the music
  3. While listening, notice the following:
    • What sounds can you hear? What instruments make up the music? How many different sounds are there?
    • Does the music change in volume? Does it get louder at some points? Does it get softer?
    • Are there any interesting moments in the music you can describe?
    • Does the music bring up any memories, thoughts, feelings, or associations?
    • How does listening to the music make your body feel?

By listening to the music while thinking about these questions, you are engaging in a mindfulness practice that focuses on auditory sensory experience and internal processing. This practice can help to ground yourself in the present and bring awareness to current internal experiences.
